Excitement!!!
So, I've been thinking about combine dates the last few days... The USBSF had posted their combine dates for Salt Lake City and Lake Placid on Facebook late last week. I've been looking at airfare and thinking about all the logistics of a trip this summer. Most of the combines are help over multiple days, so that was a big factor as well. I've talked to several people about what I should do, prayed about it, and I hadn't really come up with a plan yet. As you can probably tell, I've been consistently mulling over this for about a week. I was hoping to attend a combine sometime in June. That would give me about 2 months to prepare, and I would like to know my fate sooner than later.
I was getting online tonight to email my mom the potential dates, and I went to the USBSF website to see if they had an official list. I clicked on the combine dates tab, and do you know what I saw? McKinney, Texas. They are holding a combine in McKinney, Texas, in June! This is the only location for a combine outside of Utah and New York, and it's right down the road. I'm so excited I can't even tell you! Cheerleader arms and laughter were involved while I was sitting here in front of my computer. (If you don't believe me, just ask Katy. It looked something like this picture.) I can't stop smiling just thinking about it. Out of all the places in the entire nation for that one extra combine, they picked my town. God is so awesome! I can't believe all the time I wasted fretting about this, and He had it all under control. Lesson learned, and exciting is building.
I don't have a whole lot else to tell you besides that big news flash. Training is going well, and it will obviously ramp up now the that the combine is approaching. I'll start going to Zoom two to three days a week. My lifting needs to improve the most, so that is something I can focus on. We'll also start clocking my sprinting times to see were I'm at. I'm confident that I can post at least 600 points, which is what I've heard rumored as the minimum to make the developmental team. My sprinting has drastically improved, which was definitely my big weak spot last summer. I'll just have to keep working hard and see where this goes.
I'll wrap this up with an amusing story. I was doing stair workout progressions yesterday at a local elementary school track, and I met some interesting people. An elderly couple and their daughter were walking the track. About 20 minutes into my workout, the gentleman came and sat down on the bleachers. As soon as he walked up he said, "I'm not going to race you. I'm just here to rest." That kind of made me laugh, and then I forgot about him for awhile. Probably 20 minutes later his wife joined him. As soon as I took a break, she started talking.
"What on earth are you torturing yourself for?"(Said in that typical "old lady" voice everyone uses for story telling purposes. She actually did sound like that. Vaguely reminded me of Ms. Finster from the show Recess.)
"I'm trying out for the US bobsled team."
"Well. I never would have guessed that."
(How are you supposed to respond to that? I just stood there and smiled.)
"Where in the world do you do that? No ice in Texas."
The conversation varied with other random questions from that point. She was very inquisitive, in a nosy, old lady sort of way. If she ever got together with Katy's and my grandma's, the world might come to an end. It definitely lightened up my otherwise laborious workout.
As homage to this unknown women, I'm posting a little bit of Recess so everyone can understand my Ms. Finster comment. Ms. Sarah Beers, I know you are possibly the only person who will appreciate this, and you won't see it for another month because you're too busy studying. I'm posting this in honor of your dedication to school, studying, and that soon and coming graduation. It'll all be worth it, and then it'll be time for a little Recess!
